Health Services

Services provided for students to appraise, protect, and promote health.

This could include a Health & Wellness Student Assistance Teams (although used as a treatment approach by some)

A health clinic may or may not be located at each school with a Registered Nurse on staff.

A Licensed Practical Nurse may be utilized in areas not able to attract an RN.

Pejsach's Pointers
Health Services is not synonymous with school based health centers or clinics. The two ideas are not the same.

Health services is whatever a community deems it to be. The community decides. It is up to health professionals to make apolitical and scientifically based arguments for the need of a particular health services approach, present it to the community, facilitate adoption...but allow the community to decide. Direct access, via an on-site facility, in some situations, is nice, but not necessary! Health services can be contracted by outside services and brought into the school as needed or a combination and coordination of the two.

Health services should be available to all children.

Health Educators, Nurses (RN and/or LPNs), Physician Asssistants, Physicians, Social Workers, and others, make up the health services team. Teams of health professionals work TOGETHER to help prevent and/or treat illness, and promote wellness.

Although nurses would argue over this idea (and continue to argue, even though they are stretched thin and their numbers are shrinking everywhere), health services is NOT the exclusive turf of the the RN.

The often ignored "health promotion" aspect of health services in schools should, instead, be at the forefront. This is not a treatment only service.

School systems should elicit input on health services (and/or any of the other coordinated school health components) from its community. The school, using community teams, should assess the children's needs, parent's needs, teacher's needs, community needs, the community assets and the school capacity before determining what "health services" looks like at a particular school.
