Physical Education

Physical Education programs provide opportunities for structured, comprehensive physical activity. Preschool through Grade 12 children and youth learn essential physical, mental, spirtual and social skills that promote lifelong movement and participation in physical activity programs.

Physical Education is probably the most important program in any school. It is an essential program. Like other areas of Coordinated School Health, it is interrelated with school environment, school health, health education, as well as academics. A good PE program makes it easier to promote peace and violence prevention, and/or enhances food choices in the cafeteria. A strong PE program makes more sense when going over the "staying active" component in the Michigan Model Health curriculum, for example. A good PE Program may be more important than a good health services program, since physical activity can reduce depression and related anger, emotion based-gastroinestinal problems and headaches, often the most common complaint from adolescents visiting their school-based health centers.
"We talk the talk of getting people off their butts to combat depression and prevent illness and injuries. Yet we rely on the medical model to deal with and treat (expensive) the common depression-related adolescent problems, instead of taking them out on the track and running with them." -Pejsach
"A good PE Program has staff who WANT TO teach physical activity, measure the success of such teaching and promote life-long activity. A good PE program administrator does not hire a coach who would rather be coaching. An administrator who hires a PE instructor as opposed to "de coach," will probably have fewer children being sent to his/her office for disciplinary problems. (Pejsach would bet you on this one as well!)
Children need and want to be physically active. "Recess was a special time, not only because I could talk freely with my friends, but I also had the freedom to run, throw a ball and laugh. I had a chance to let off some steam."

Physical education is not about coaching and/or sports exclusively. Physical education is about providing structured programs in which everyone gets a chance to participate. Sports is an important component of a school community. It should NOT be the focus of a PE program.
"Here's my challenge: Do PE correctly and your school district will NOT need the so-called 'Alternative Programs (boot camp!?)' which, in fact, are variations of the PE programs theme. Put my Martial Arts program (a structured PE program in which everyone participates) and I guarantee reductions in violence, absenteeism, drop out rates, as well as improvements in academic performance (guaranteed better test scores?...God, what am I doing!?). Anyone out there willing to take the challenge? Want to try to win my $1,000?"

"Ever notice that schools with weak PE programs often have the higher drops out, and/or absentee levels? I'd venture to guess that if you take a look at the schools in your school district and check out the school with the best attendance and the best graduation rates, you'll find a school with a comprehensive skills-based PE program." -Pejsach
"Let's stop being weenies on this subject: if the coach wants to coach instead of teaching children how to be active, instead of doing his/her best as a PE TEACHER, then, for the children's sake, GET RID OF HIM OR HER. Put a PE teacher in his/her place....please!" -Pejsach
